Gypsy Davy- Hobart (OH) pre1939 Eddy B

[From Eddy's Ballads and Songs from Ohio, 1939

Eddy B seems to have been adapted from the same minstrel version published by Hooley (1863), De Witt (1872) and Wehman (1880s). Here's the first verse, chorus and last verse from Wehman's Universal Songster Volume 7:

GIPSY DAVY- Hooley (1863), De Witt (1872),  Wehman (1884-1889)

There was a lord, a high-born lord,
Who courted a high-born lady;
She lived in a palace all so grand,
'Till she met with the Gipsy Davy.

Chorus.
Elopments now are all the go,
They set the darkeys crazy;
Take warning all, both great and small.
And beware of the Gipsy Davy.

Last night she laid in a dear feather-bed,
And in her arms her baby;
To-night she'll lay on the cold, cold ground,
In the arms of Gipsy Davy -Chorus

Gypsy Davy- Helen Hobart (OH) pre1939 Eddy B; learned from Mrs. E. J. Schlabach of Canton, Ohio.

He was a high born gentleman,
She was a high born lady;
They lived in a castle great and tall,
'Till she met with the Gypsy Davy.

Chorus.
La, la, fa, la, dilda, didlda, dale,
La, la, fa, la, dilda, didlda, daisy;
Coem one and all, both great and small.
And beware of the Gypsy Davy.

Last night she slept in her warm feather-bed,
And in her arms her baby;
But tonight she sleeps on the cold, cold ground,
In the arms of the Gypsy Davy - Chorus
