Gipsy Davy- (NY) 1880s Wehman's Universal Songster

[From: Wehman's Universal Songster Volume 7. This version is nearly identical to the 1863 version from Hooley's Opera House Songster which was attributed to famous Brooklyn, NY minstrel singer and entertainer Archy (Archie) Hughes. It was also reprinted(?) in De Witt's Forget-Me-Not Songster in 1872 with Wehman's identical chorus.

GIPSY DAVY- Wehman's Universal Songster Volume 7 1884-1889

There was a lord, a high-born lord,
Who courted a high-born lady;
She lived in a palace all so grand,
'Till she met with the Gipsy Davy.

Chorus.
Elopments now are all the go,
They set the darkeys crazy;
Take warning all, both great and small.
And beware of the Gipsy Davy.

This lord he was a fine young man,
And he set this lady crazy,
So she packed up her duds and away she ran
Along with the Gipsy Davy.-Chorus

Her parients raved and tore their hair,
When they come for to miss that 'ere lady.
And then to think, of that sweet born heir
None knew but the Gipsy Davy.-Chorus.

Oh, how could she leave her house and lands,
Oh, how could she leave her baby?
Oh. how could she leave her own wedded hand,
To run off with the Gipsy Davy!-Chorus.

Last night she laid in a dear feather-bed,
And in her arms her baby;
To-night she'll lay on the cold, cold ground,
In the arms of Gipsy Davy -Chorus
