Georgie- Mehrten, Dorothy (CA) 1952 Cowell

Georgie- Mehrten, Dorothy (CA) 1952 Cowell/ Bronson No. 14

[From LC/AAFS rec. no. 11, 334 (A2).
Collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell, this is a second version from the Mehrten family, only one line of text is different. At the LOC here: AFS 11,334-11,335: Two tapes containing folk songs sung by Dorothy Mehrten of Colvaras County, California, narratives spoken by John Merten of Clements, California, and songs sung by Ada Jane Merten of Clements, California. Recorded in Oakland, California, October 14, and in Clements, California, October 21, 1952.

Dorothy's version is nearly identical to Ada Jane Mehften's (the wife of John Mehrten) and I presume this is a family version and Dorothy is related to John (not sure yet of the relationship).

Georgie- Sung by Dorothy Mehrten of Oakland, CA on October 14, 1952. Collected by Cowell.

Go bridal me my milk-white steed,
Go saddle him in a hurry.
That I may ride to the Orphans' court,
To plead for the life of Georgie.

O Georgie never robbed.on the King's highway,
Or never murdered any;
But he stole sixteen of the King's white steeds
And conveyed them away to the Army.

O Georgie was hung with a silken cord,
Such cords there be not many,
Because he was of a noble blood
And loved by a virtuous lady.
