NOTES: "Don't You Hear the Bells A-Ringing?" or "Don't You Hear Them Bells A-Ringing?" is a public domain/traditional old-time/bluegrass gospel song. It's based on Daniel de Marbelle, 1887 song "When They Ring Those Golden Bells." There also a tag from the song, "Climbin' Up the Golden Stairs."

This version, collected by EC Perrow, comes from the Journal of American Folklore, Volume 24 by American Folklore Society in 1911. Here are two versions of When They Ring Those Golden Bells:

When They Ring Those Golden Bells (Traditional: Arranged by Emory Gordy/ Patty Loveless)

There's a land beyond the river that we call the sweet forever
And we only reach that shore by faith, you see
Yes I want to see my Jesus
Shake His hand and have Him great us
When they ring those golden bells for you and me

Don't you hear the bells a-ringin'
Can't you hear the angels singin'
It's a glory hallelujah jubilee
In the far off great forever just beyond the shining river
When they ring those golden bells for you and me

When our days have known their number
When in death we sweetly slumber
When the Kingdom mends the spirit to be free
There'll be no more stormy weather
We'll live peacefully together
When they ring those golden bells for you and me

Don't you hear the bells a-ringin'
Can't you hear the angels singin'
It's a glory hallelujah jubilee
In the far off great forever just beyond the shining river
When they ring those golden bells for you and me
When they ring those golden bells for you and me

WHEN THEY RING THE GOLDEN BELLS- Words & Music: Daniel de Marbelle, 1887

There’s a land beyond the river,
That we call the sweet forever,
And we only reach that shore by faith’s decree;
One by one we’ll gain the portals,
There to dwell with the immortals,
When they ring the golden bells for you and me.

Refrain: Don’t you hear the bells now ringing?
Don’t you hear the angels singing?
’Tis the glory hallelujah Jubilee.
In that far off sweet forever,
Just beyond the shining river,
When they ring the golden bells for you and me.

We shall know no sin or sorrow,
In that haven of tomorrow,
When our barque shall sail beyond the silver sea;
We shall only know the blessing
Of our Father’s sweet caressing,
When they ring the golden bells for you and me.

Refrain

When our days shall know their number,
And in death we sweetly slumber,
When the King commands the spirit to be free;
Nevermore with anguish laden,
We shall reach that lovely Eden,
When they ring the golden bells for you and me.

Refrain

92. DON'T YOU HEAR THEM BELLS A-RINGIN'? Journal of American Folklore, Volume 24 By American Folklore Society 1911; EC Perrow

A probable variation of "In the Evening by the Moonlight" is scarcely recognizable. The song is thoroughly mixed with the old spiritual; the result is a song without individuality.

Don't you hear them bells a-ringin'?
  How sweet, I do declare!
Don't you hear them *angels singin',
Climbin' up the golden stairs?

Oh, Peter was so wicked,
  Climbin' up the golden stairs,
When I asked him for a ticket,
 Climbin' up the golden stairs.

If you think he is a fool,
  Climbin' up the golden stairs,
He will treat you mighty rude,
Climbin' up the golden stairs.
