NOTES: "Do You Think I'll Make A Soldier?" or "Rise and Shine" is a traditional spiritual and a gospel song. According to Meade who lists a version titled "Do You Think I'll Make A Soldier?" under Climbing Jacob's Ladder, the song was written by H.P. Danks (unknown date) before 1875 when it appeared in the Hamtown Students Songster. He lists an early country recording by E.R. Nance Family in 1931. Dolly Parton recently covered the song bringing it firmly into the bluegrass genre. There are two versions 1)  is from The Cross Jordan Singers and 2) is from Golden Gate Quartet c. 1941 below. i've also included related versions.

"Do You Think I'll Make A Soldier?" is the verse of "Rise and Shine." Both songs are one-part only (no chorus). There are spiritual versions with the "Rise and Shine" chorus. "Rise and Shine" is related to the "Jacob Ladder" songs. One spiritual version was published circa 1880 by the Fisk Jubilee Singers:

No. 96. Rise and Shine- Fisk Jubilee Singers

Chorus: Oh, brethren, rise and shine, and give God the glory, glory,
Rise and shine and give God the glory, glory,
Rise and shine and give God the glory for the year of Jubilee.

1. Don't you want to be a soldier, soldier, soldier,
Don't you want to be a soldier, soldier, soldier?
Don't you want to be a soldier, soldier, soldier,
for the year of Jubilee?

2. Do you think I will make a soldier,
For the year of Jubilee?

3. Yes, I think you will make a soldier,
For the year of Jubilee!

"Sing the three verses in succession, and after the third verse go back to the beginning, and sing the words, "Then you must rise," etc."

The song also appears in revival hymnals like Victory Bells in 1908:

Rise And Shine- from Victory Bells: By Charles E. Rowley 1908

CHORUS: Rise, shine, give God the glory.
Rise, shine, give God the glory.
Rise, shine, give God the glory.
Soldiers of the cross.

1. Do you think I'll make a soldier,
Do you think I'll make a soldier,
Do you think I'll make a sold-ier,
Soldiers of the cross.

2. Yes, I think I'll make a soldier,
Yes, I think I'll make a soldier,
Yes, I think I'll make a sold-ier,
Soldiers of the cross.

3. I'm so glad I've joined the army, etc.

4. Jesus is our mighty captain, etc.

5. He has never lost a battle, etc.

6. By and by we'll go and meet Him, etc.

7. Won't that be a happy meeting, etc.

8. There we'll shout and sing forever, etc.

Lyrics from the song appeared in the 1915 Folk Song of the American Negro by John Wesley Work:

"O brethren, rise, shine, give God the glory,
For the year of Jubilee."

"Do you want to be a soldier,
For the year of Jubilee?"
