NOTES: "Do You Call That Religion?" or "Do You Call Dat Religion?"  is a traditional spiritual and a bluegrass gospel song. This version is from Dorothy Scarborough's 1919 book, From a Southern Porch (No Title Given).

The song is known under many titles (See OTHER NAMES above)  known variously as “Drinking Shine,” “God Don't Like It,” and “Scandalous and a Shame” and has been collected by Scarborough, White, and others. The popular black gospel quartet song from the mid- 1920s was adapted by whites and recorded first by Skillet Licker Gid Tanner as "You've Got To Stop Drinking Shine" in 1930 then by Bill and Charlie Monroe in 1936 as "Do You Call That Religion?"

A recent variant that has become popular in African-American churches today is "Scandalize My Name" which was the title Paul Robeson used for the song. The word "brother" is substituted for "religion."

Scandalize My Name (excerpt) Paul Robeson

I met my brother the other day
And gave him my right hand
As soon as ever my back was turned
He scandalized my name

CHORUS: Now do you call that a brother?
No, no
You call that a brother?
No, no
You call that a brother
No, no
Scandalize my name

Do You Call Dat Religion? From a Southern Porch by Dorothy Scarborough 1919

Some preachers, dey is preachin'
Jes' for a preacher's name,
But de doctrine dey is preachin'
Hit's scand'lous an' a shame.

Chorus: Do you call dat religion? Oh, no!
Do you call dat religion? Oh, no!
Do you call dat religion? Oh, no!
Hit's scan'lous an' a shame.

An' den we hab some deacons
Who sit in de rulin' chair.
Dey duty is to see atter us,
But dey say dat dey don' care. Chorus:

An' den we hab some brothers
Dat's giben to hab two wives,
An' ef you spring dat question,
You'll see dey dander rise. Chorus:

An' den we hab some sisters
Who claim dey is very meek,
But dey pass by each other's do'
An' neber stop to speak. Chorus:

An' den we hab some members
Who are on de road to hell,
If dey're not wropped up in dis worl',
Dey'll say dey're not doin' well. Chorus:

Dey'll play dominoes an' checkers,
Play cards an' baseball too,
An' ef you try to correc' dem,
Dey'll say dey's es good es you. Chorus:

If dey hear dat you is sick,
You'll see dem slip an" dodge;
Dey won't come nigh to see you,
Ef you don' belong to dey lodge. Chorus :

When you are well an' wealthy,
 So many are yo' frien's;
But when you get unhealthy,
Dey seldom will come in. Chorus:

De church folks will borrow money
An' promise sure to pay,
But when dey sees you comin',
Dey goes some odder way. Chorus:

Now you say you been converted,
Why don't you stop tellin' lies,
Stop drinkin' beer an' whisky,
An' be more civilized?" Chorus:

Do You Call That Religion?- Monroe Brothers 1936

CHORUS: Do you call that religion, oh no
Do you call that religion, no child, no
Do you call that religion, oh no
I declare ain't that a shame.

Well the deacon in a church house
All reared back in his chair
But when you tell him about his duty
He'll say that he don't care

CHORUS: Do you call that religion, oh no
Do you call that religion, no child, no
Do you call that religion, oh no
I declare ain't that a shame

Well he'll claim you've been converted
Why don't you stop telling lies
Quit drinkin' your beer and your whiskey
And live a more different life

CHORUS: Do you call that religion, oh no
Do you call that religion, no child, no
Do you call that religion, oh no
I declare ain't that a shame.

Last Sunday while the preacher was a-preachin'
You all began to shout
When he asked for a little collection
But had your mouth poked out

CHORUS:  Do you call that religion, oh no
Do you call that religion, no child no
Do you call that religion, oh no
I declare ain't that a shame

CHORUS (slowly):  Do you call that religion, oh no
Do you call that religion, no child no
