NOTES: "Done Made My Vow To The Lord" is a traditional spiritual. One of the versions below is from American Negro Songs, 230 Folk Songs and Spirituals, Religious and Secular. John W. Work, 1940. The tune is somewhat similar to "Go Down, Moses," so the two may be related. The line "sometimes I'm up, sometimes I'm down" is also used in "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See."

Jeanette Thompson (soprano) sings "Done Made My Vow" (arr. E. Boatner) in her album Negro Spirituals (Pavane Records ADW 7267), in a slow and mournful way. The late Thea Bowman sang the song on the out of print audiotape, Thea Bowman - Songs of My People. It was recorded by the Fisk Jubilee Singers (Album title "Fisk Jubilee Singers"), on Folkways Records in 1955. Many choral groups including the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chamber Singers have performed and recorded the song.

A related version "I Open My Mouth" was quoted by Maya Angelou in her tribute to Coretta Scott King speech.

DONE MADE MY VOW TO THE LORD- Traditional Spiritual- John Work- 1940

REFRAIN: Done made my vow to the Lord
And I never will turn back.
I will go, I shall go
To see what the end will be.
Done opened my mouth to the Lord
And I never will turn back.
I will go, I shall go
To see what the end will be.

VERSES:

LEADER: Sometimes I'm up, sometimes I'm down,

PEOPLE: See what the end will be.
PEOPLE: Until I reach the mountain top,
PEOPLE: See what the end will be.

PEOPLE: See what the end will be.

PEOPLE: See what the end will be.

Done Made My Vow- Innerlight Choir lyrics

Done made my vow to the Lord
And I ne-ber will turn back!
Oh, I will go!
I shall go!
To see what the end will be

Amazing Grace how sweet the sound
(To see what the end will be!)
I once was lost but now I’m found
(To see what the end will be)

If you get there before I do
(To see what the end will be)
Tell all my friends I’m coming too!
(To see what the end will be)

Done made my vow to the Lord
And I ne-ber will turn back!
Oh, I will go!
I shall go!
To see what the end will be

Maya Angelou began and ended her tribute to Coretta Scott King with a quote from the spiritual song "I Open My Mouth."

"MAYA ANGELOU: [singing] I open my mouth to the Lord, and I won't turn
back no. I will go. I shall go. I'll see what the end is going to be.
[speaking] In the midst of national tumult, in the medium of
international violent uproar, Coretta Scott King's face remained a
study in serenity....

I pledge to you, my sister, I will never cease. I mean to say, I want
to see a better world. I mean to say, I want to see some peace
somewhere. I mean to say, I want to see some honesty, some fair play.
I want to see kindness and justice. This is what I want to see. I want
to see it through my eyes and through your eyes, Coretta Scott King.
[singing] I open my mouth to the Lord, and I won't turn back. No I
will go. I shall go. I'll see what the end is going to be. Thank you."

I Open My Mouth (I Won't Turn Back)

Done made my vow to the Lord
O, Lord, I'll never turn back.
I will go! I shall go to see what the end will be.

I open my mouth to the Lord,
And I won't turn back.
I will go! I shall go to see what the end is gonna be.

If you don't believe that I've been redeemed,
Just follow me down to Jordan's stream.

I open my mouth to the Lord,
And I won't turn back.
I will go! I shall go to see what the end is gonna be."

DONE MADE MY VOW- Roland Hayes

Done made my vow to the Lord and I never will turn back,
I will go, I shall go, to see what the end will be.
My strength good Lord is almost gone,
I will go, I shall go, to see what the end will be.

You have told me to fight on.
I will go, I shall go, to see what the end will be.
I open my mouth to the Lord, and I never will turn back,
I will go, I shall go, to see what the end will be.

When once your hand was unto the sword,
I will go, I shall go, to see what the end will be.
There's no retreat till you see the Lord,
I will go, I shall go, to see what the end will be.
