Barbary Ellen- Osbourne (AR) pre1946 Randolph C

Barbary Ellen- Osbourne (AR) pre1946 Randolph C

[My title. No date given. Single stanza from Ozark Folksongs; Randolph, I, 1946, p. 129 (C). Randolph's notes include this curious comment, "There are several commercial records of this ballad, of which those by Al Craver (Columbia 15126-D) and Vernon Dalhart (Brunswick 117) are probably the best." It should be noted that Dalhart and Craver are the same person!! Craver is one of the many pseudonyms Dalhart used to record for different companies.

C. Barbary Ellen. From Mrs. Virginia Osbourne, Pea Ridge, Ark., no date. Mrs. Osbourne's text is very much like the others in this group, excepting the first stanza:

There once was a pretty fair maid,
And she lived on Lake Vitallon,
She'd be my own true bride, she said,
And her name was Barbary Ellen.
