NOTES: "Army Of The Lord" appears in William Hauser's Olive Leaf published in 1887. It's laso an African-American spiritual found in Hampton's 1901 Cabin and Plantation songs. Both songs appear in Jackson's "White and Negro Spirituals" p. 186, 187.

"Takes a humble soul to join us, In the army of the Lord" is a version of the spiritual that appears in John Work's 1901 book.

The song is familiar old marching song from the 1800s: "I'm er goin' up ter join in the army of the Lord, I'm er goin' up ter join in the army."

In the West Virginia Camp Creek Jesus Only Church in the 1970 lead by Rev. Joe Turner: "I'm a soldier in the army of the Lord," the believers sing, repeating the phrase again and again. Occasionally the chant changes slightly:

"If I sing, let me sing in the army of the Lord,
"If I preach, let me preach in the army of the Lord.
"If I die, let me die in the army of the Lord."

ARMY OF THE LORD- 1887 Olive Leaf, William Hauser p. 23;

I long to see the season's come
I am going to join in the army.
When Sinners shall come flocking home,
I am going to join in the army.

CHORUS: I am going to join in the army of the Lord
I am going to join in the army.
