Dandoo- Smith (VA) 1916 Sharp A, Davis C

[My title, replacing Sharp's generic title. Both Davis C adn D were collected by Sharp who combined the versions to create one version- Sharp's A version. The fact that Sharp did not publish this and it was figured out by Davis is a bit troubling.]

THE WIFE WRAPT IN WETHER'S SKIN

C. ["Dandoo."]"The wife wrapt in Wether's skin." collected by Mr. Cecil J. sharp and Miss Karpeles. Sung by Mrs. Puss Smith at Charlottesville, Va. Albemarle County Sept. 26, 1916. cf. campbell and Sharp, No. 33 A. The first stanza there printed is taken from this (Mrs. Smith's) variant.  The rest comes from Mrs. Chisholm (Virginia D). The two are very close together, however.

1 There was an old man he had a wife,
Dandoo, dandoo,
There was an old man he had a wife,
Cling a ma clang a Ya.clearo,
There was an old man he had a wife,
And she plagued him of his life,
To my kum lam slam dam,
Clearey O Jimmy go.

2 When this old man came in from his plough,
Says, "Old woman',is my supper ready now?"

3 She says, "There's a piece of meat and bread upon the shelf'
If that don't do, go and cook it yourself'"

4 This old man went out to his sheep-pen,
And soon had off an old wether's skin.

5 He placed it on his old wife's back,
And with two sticks went whickety whack.

6. I'll tell your daddy and mammy and all your kin
How I tanned my wether's skin."
