A Little Soldier- Martha Stamper (KY) Sept. 18, 1917 Sharp's EFFSA

[My title. From English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians; Sharp/Karpeles I, 1932. Martha Stamper is kin to Charlie and Art Stamper through Hiram Stamper their father. All are from Knott Co., Kentucky. See my article on the Stampers in Fiddler Magazine.

There is an additional verse, not sure of it's source- not in Sharp or Bronson.

[A Little Soldier] -- Sung by Mrs. MARTHA STAMPER at Hindman, Knott Co., Ky., Sept. 18, 1917; Sharp C.
Hexatonic (no 6th).

1. There was a little soldier just lately come from war;
He courted a rich lady and money she had in store;
Her riches was so greatly that scarcely could be told,
But yet she loved a soldier boy because he were so bold.

2 She says: "My little soldier, I would freely be your wife,
If I know my cruel old father would surely take your life."
He drew his pistol and sword and hung them by his side,
And swore he would get married, let what would betide.
