No. 56 (The Cruel Mother)

This is Child Ballad 20, better known as The Cruel Mother. Allan Kelly, who knows hundreds of Acadian French songs, learned this from his father, who was of Irish descent. Allan Kelly has an astonishing repertoire of five or six hundred songs, in both languages.

THERE WAS A GIRL HER NAME WAS YOUNG
(DOWN BY THE GREENWOOD SIDE-I-O)
Sung by Allan Kelly of Chaplin Island Road, Newcastle, Northumberland County, New Brunswick  March 1961)

There was a girl her name was young
Ha-la-dee-ha-la-la-lie-o
There was a girl her name was young,
Down by the greenwood side-i-o.

And she did have a pretty little baby
Ha-la-de e-ha-la-la-lie-o
And she did have a pretty little baby
Down by the greenwood side-i-o.

She took her garter from her knee
Ha-la-dee-ha-la-la-lie-o
She took her garter from her knee
Down by the greenwood side-i-o

And she did tie two pretty little hands
Ha-la-dee-ha-la-l a-lie-o
And she did tie two pretty little hands
Down by the greenwood side-i-o

She took her knife both long and sharp
Ha-la-dee-ha-la-la-lie-o
She took her knife both long and sharp
Down by the greenwood side-i-o

And she did murdered her little baby
Ha-la-dee-ha-la-la-lie-o
And she did murdered her little baby
Down by the greenwood side-i-o

Heaven is high and Hell is low
Ha-la-dee-ha-la-la-lie-o
And when she dies she's in Hell she'll go
Down by the greenwood side-i-o
