The Wave on the Sea- Carter Family (VA) 1941 REC

[From: The Carter Family's last Bluebird session Oct5. 14, 1941 in New York City.  This is one of the last recordings they did in the studio. Not sure why the title isn't "The Waves," plural. In this version there is no mermaid.

THE WAVE ON THE SEA- Recorded by the Carter Family; 1941

Oh, the waves on the sea, how they roll
The chilly winds, how they do blow
My own true love got drownded in the deep
And the ship never got to the shore

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

Oh, the first on the deck was a porter of the ship
And a rough-looking fellow was he
Says, "I care no more for my wife and my child
Than I do for the fish in the sea."

Oh, the waves on the sea, how they roll
The chilly winds, how they do blow
My own true love got drownded in the deep
And the ship never got to the shore

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

Well, I left my dear darling a-grieving
Well, I left my dear darling a-grieving
I left my dear darling grieving after me
For I never expect to see her anymore

    [INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

Oh, the waves on the sea, how they roll
The chilly winds, how they do blow
My own true love got drownded in the deep
And the ship never got to the shore
