Lady Margret- Keeton (VA) 1916 Sharp F

Lady Margret- Keeton (VA) 1916 Sharp F

[My title. First stanza with music from: English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians; 1917 Sharp/Campbell and 1932 edition, edited by Karpeles; 2nd verse from Davis TBVa, 1929. All of Sharp's versions use the generic title, Fair Margaret and Sweet William. Fair Margaret is not the name that is sung, usually it's Lady (Liddy/Lydia) Margaret (Marget/Margret).

Notes from the 1932 edition follow.

F. [Lady Margret.]
Sung by Mrs. ORILLA KEETON at Mount Fair, Va., Sept. 26, 1916; 2nd verse from Davis TBVa, 1929.
Pentatonic. Mode 3 (Tonic G).

1. O down she threw her ivory comb,
And back she toss'd her hair;
And a - down she fell from that high, high window
And never was more seen there, seen there,
And never was more seen there.

2. "O I knew nothing of Lady Margret,
And she knew nothing of me.
Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock
Lady Margret my bride shall be, shall be,
Lady Margret my bride shall be."
