Hi Lum Day- Schaupp (OH) 1937 Kirkland; Bronson 20

"Hi Lum Day" -E. C. and M. N. Kirkland, SFQ, II (1938), p.73 by Mrs. Mariana Schaupp, Columbus, Ohio, July 1937, learned from her father, of Beatrice, Nebr.

1. One day the old devil he came to my plow
(Whistled refrain)
Saying, " 'tis one of your children that I must have now,"
To my hi-ium, hi-lum day.

2. Your oldest daughter I do not crave,
Bur your old scolding wife 'tis she I must have."

3. "Well," said the old man, "if the rest you will leave.
My old scolding wife 'tis she you may have."

4 So he packed her off till he came to Hell,
And he pitched her in saying, "There you may dwell."

5. Came old Beelzebub, rattling his chains;
She picked up a poker and beat out his brains.

6. Came three little devils to raise her up higher;
She up with her foot and kicked nine in the fire.

7. Then the old she-devil looked over the wall,
Saying, "Take her 'way, Mr. Devil or she'll kill us all."

8. So he picked her up all on his back.
Like an old johnny pedlar went packing her back.

9. She was seven years going and seven years coming,
And she called for the mush she left in the oven.

10. "Well," said the old man, "what to do I can't tell,
If you aren't fit for heaven and you won't stay in hell."
