Charmant Billie- Commeaux (LA) 1934 Lomax REC

[From Traditional Music in Coastal Louisiana: The 1934 Lomax Recordings by Joshua Clegg Caffery. There are several Cajun versions and Luneda Commeaux version was recorded by Lomax and also appears in  Louisiana French Folk Songs by Irène Thérèse Whitfield; Louisiana State University Press, 1939.

Not much is known about Commeaux except she lived in  New Iberia, La. and was born circa 1892. A photo of her may be found in the Lomax collection.

Charmant Billie-
Luneda Commeaux 1934 REC

D'ou to devians, Charmant Billie
Billie Garcon, d'ou to devians,
Charmant Billie, Billie Garcon?
Tu devians, oui, de la ville,
C'est pour voir, O la jeune fille;
C'est por voir la jeune fille qui laisse pas sa maman.

Charming Billie [translation]

From where do you come Charming Billie,
Billie Boy from where do you come,
Charming Billie, Billie Boy?
Yep, you just come from town,
 Just to see the young girl,
To see the young girl who cannot leave her mother.
