Contributed by Mr. Morgan Tamblyn Hanrick, East Bank, Kanawha County,June , 1927. Music noted by Miss Lydia I. Hinkel.

It was down in the valley so early one morning,
So early one morning, so early one morn;
I spied a young cowboy, all dressed in white linen,
All dressed in white linen, as fair as the day.

Chorus:
So beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly,
And sound the dead marches to carry mo away,
Take me to some churohyard, and roll the sod o'er mo.
For I am a oowboy and I know I must die.

In 8A chorus, line 1, ms. shows 'drums' in text under music, 'drum' in regular text (Herzog).
