NOTES: G Major; One part song. "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" is a popular Christian hymn written by Ada R. Habershon with music by Charles H. Gabriel in 1907. The song is often recorded unattributed. The classic version is the Carter Family recording done in 1935 titled, "Can the Circle Be Unbroken (Bye and Bye)."

The song is the theme of The Merle Watson Festival in Wilkesboro and has been recorded by just about evey bluegrass group at some point. Will the Circle Be Unbroken is also the title of a 1972 album officially by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, but with collaboration from many famous Bluegrass and Country performers, including Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, Bashful Brother Oswald, Norman Blake, Jimmy Martin, and others. It also introduced fiddler Vassar Clements to a wider audience.

It's ironic that an Englishwoman, Ada Habershon is the lyric author of one of the most celebrated country/bluegrass gospel songs in America. Here are her lyrics:

There are loved ones in the glory
Whose dear forms you often miss.
When you close your earthly story,
Will you join them in their bliss?

CHORUS: Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting
In the sky, in the sky?

In the joyous days of childhood
Oft they told of wondrous love
Pointed to the dying Saviour;
Now they dwell with Him above. (Chorus)

You remember songs of heaven
Which you sang with childish voice.
Do you love the hymns they taught you,
Or are songs of earth your choice? (Chorus)

You can picture happy gath'rings
Round the fireside long ago,
And you think of tearful partings
When they left you here below. (Chorus)

One by one their seats were emptied.
One by one they went away.
Now the family is parted.
Will it be complete one day? (Chorus)

Most bluegrass versions use lyrics from the verses collected by AP Carter and popularized by the Carter Family. Other verses have been attached to the Carters lyrics.

Circle Be Unbroken- Bluegrass Messengers

I was standing by the window
On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw that hearse come rolling
Lord to carry my mother away

   Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord bye and bye
   There's a better home a waiting
In the sky Lord in the sky

So I told the undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For that body you are hauling
Lord I hate to see her go

Well I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in that grave.

I went back home Lord my home was lonesome
Since my mother, she was gone
All my brothers and sisters crying
What a home so sad and alone.
