Matteson Publications was started around 1993 in an effort to create an outlet for my books and arrangements. I had already published my first books with Mel Bay and was hoping I could build my own company. I enlisted the talent of a small group of arrangers and writers and started the company, which was run out of my basement. I had a computer, Finale and a copy machine- that was about the extent of the business.
After a year or two I could see I would spending most of my time, advertising, promoting, dealing with customers requests and filling orders and the bigger the company got the more I'd be doing things I didn't want to do. People loved the arrangements and would request items not in the catalogue but they wouldn't pay you enough to make it worth your time to do custom arrangements of songs. I didn't want to hire people because there was very little money coming in- instead I got my ex-wife to help but that didn't go well. Finally after about three years I'd had enough and decided I'd let established publishers deal with mailing out orders- and the customers.
