Published Books: Non-Fiction (Music) Richard L. Matteson Jr.

My first short music book, Folk Songs From The Appalachian Mountains was published by Mel Bay in 1992. I drove to Pacific, Missiouri and met Bill Bay at the publishing plant in 1991. I also had the privledge of meeting and talking in length with Mel Bay. Mel and his wife came out and visited us in November 1992. We had lunch at Old Salem with Aaron and Lorraine Shearer. Bill has always been coordial and available to consider proposals or deal with issues. He is retiring and my relationship with Mel Bay is uncertain.

Most of my Mel Bay books, which were long out-of-print have been reissued as digital books through Amazon.com and Mel Bay. The solo (acoustic) guitar books, originally issued with cassette they were reissued with CDs around 1998. My latest 2010 book, Acoustic Music Source Book, was not issued in-house as originally planned and instead is a POD (pay on demand) book issued through Amazon.com which means Mel Bay is not promoting it or listing it the same way in their pubicity and calendar.

I self-published one book: Scales and Modes in the mid-1990s. I planned to self-publish that series (Intervals for Guitar Solo; Chords and Arpeggios) but haven't yet. The books are complete just not professionally printed like Scales and Modes. I started Matteson Publications about 1994 and wrote several short music books that are unpublished. There are also many arrangements of songs and solo peices for guitar. This includes only my published books. Some of the cover images are currently unavailable.

Two of the books below with and *asterisk (Mel Bay Best Traditional/Folk Solos and New Music for Classical Guitar) are compilations published by Mel Bay with only one of my pieces included and shouldn't be considered my book.

I'm also mentioned in two books. I'm in Aaron Shearer's "Learning the Classic Guitar" listed as a contributing editor. At one point my role in the Aaron's books was more significant but other talented people including Alan Hirsh and Tom Poore joined in. I'm also in The Mel Bay story published before Mel's death in 1997. I believe that after Mel died the book was pulled from the catalogue by Bill Bay and no longer sold- so it is probably a bit of a collectors item.

I have recently two completed unpublished music books:

1) Country Music: The Early Years  (Returned by Mel Bay becasue it was too long over 300 pages)

2) Learning to Play the Guitar, TAB edition, Book 1. (Short book, looking for a publisher)
