NOTES: Joe and Odell Thompson's version use the "Western Country/Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss" lyrics. The Carolina Chocolate Drops do an excellent cover of this tune that they learned from Joe Thompson. The only difference I can hear is the last part of two lines which sounds like "all around my daisy."

Related to "Send for the Fiddle, Send for the Bow," with versions by Elizabeth Cotton and by Dink Roberts.

The song under this title was first collected in 1920 or 1921: "The Black-Eyed Daisy," sung by Mrs. Jennie Belvin, Durham, NC in Brown Collection. (See Version 1)

A version was collected by Karpeles and published in EFSSA Vol. 2 in 1932, (#127C):

Send for the fiddle and send for the bow.
And send for the blue-eved daisy.
Send for the boy that broke my heart
And almost sent me crazy.

BLACK EYED DAISY- Joe and Odell Thompson's

(Fiddle Banjo)

Send for the fiddle and send for bow
Send for the black-eyed daisy
You won't come and I won't go
Almost drove me crazy, all around my day
Almost drove me crazy, all around my daisy

(Fiddle Banjo)

Send for the fiddle and send for bow
Send for the black-eyed daisy
You won't come and I won't go
Almost drove me crazy, all around my day
Almost drove me crazy, all around my daisy

(Fiddle Banjo)

BLACK EYED DAISY- Carolina Chocolate Drops

(Fiddle Banjo)

Send for the fiddle and send for bow
Send for the black-eyed daisy
You won't come and I won't go
You almost drove me crazy, You almost drove me crazy,
You almost drove me crazy, You almost drove me crazy.

(Fiddle Banjo)

Send for the fiddle and send for bow
Send for the black-eyed daisy
You won't come and I won't go
You almost drove me crazy, You almost drove me crazy,
You almost drove me crazy, You almost drove me crazy.

Black Eyed Daisy- Jennie Belvin

#310 The Black Eyed Daisy

"The Black-Eyed Daisy," sung by Mrs. Jennie Belvin, Durham, in 1920 or 21. This tune rperesents an interesting phenomenon: two different singers and two different songs. And of all the different versions of "The Gypsy Laddie," (IV 84-91) there is one which uses the almost identical melodic line as our present song. But what a different use of the same material.

Cf IV 84-5, No 37B, For textual reminiscenses cf III 340, No. 286 B, last line of first stanza and 286C, last line of chorus; also JAFL xliv 424.

Send for the fiddle and send for the bow,
Send for the black-eyed Daisy.
Don't reach here by the middle of the week.
It's almost run me crazy,
It's almost run me crazy.

p. 222, vol. V of the Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina
Folklore, Duke University Press, 1962.

This little verse is all there is, and the tune appears similar to the one
Joe Thompson uses.

Here's what Brown gives, (number 310, pg 306 in the third printing, 1971):

The Black-Eyed Daisy

The second of the two stanzas given below has been reported as Negro song from South Carolina (JAFL XLIV 424) and from Alabama (ANFS 68). Mrs. Steely found the song in the Ebenezer community in wake county. "The Black-Eyed Daisy." Reported by Jennie Belvin of Durham sometime in 1920-21. With the tune.

Send for the fiddle and send for the bow,
Send for the Black-Eyed Daisy.
Don't reach here by the middle of the week.
It's almost run me crazy,
Almost run me crazy.

Who's been here since I been gone?
Send for the black-eyed Daisy.
Pretty little girl with the red dress on.
Send for the Black-eyed Daisy.
Send for the Black-eyed Daisy.
