NOTES: The song consists of floating verses that mention Saro. Recorded in 1928 by Sam Caplinger. The song is not the same song as the Dave Macon song, “Rock about My Saro Jane” sometimes called Saro Jane. It’s also not the same song as “Pretty Saro.” Many of the floating verses found in Saro come from the Cindy family of songs. Here’s some info from Andrew Kuntz:

D Major. Standard. AABB. Recorded in 1928 for Brunswick/Vocalation by West Virginia string band duo the Cumberland Mountain Entertainers (Sam Caplinger & fiddler Andy Patterson {1893-1950}). Later the duo moved to Akron, Ohio, and formed the Dixie Harmonizers, who recorded for Gennett. Tom Carter and Barry Poss (1976) remark that the tune is common in the Patrick County, southwestern Virginia, area both as a dance or 'band' tune, and a song (with many verses).

Here are the lyrics to Saro by Caplinger's Cumberland Mountain Entertainers:

SARO
"Saro" by "Warren Caplinger's Cumberland Mountain Entertainers"
Brunswick 241 Recorded: February 1, 1928 Issued: June 1928

(Fiddle)
It’s Saro on the mountain,
It’s Saro on the plain,
Goin’ to see my Saro,
My little ol’ Saro Jane.

(Fiddle)
Oh when she sees me coming,
She’s down behind barn.
*Saro, Saro is the prettiest thing,
That ever lived or died.

(Fiddle)
She hugged me and she kissed me
She called me sugar plum
She threw her arms around me,
I thought my time had come.

(Fiddle)
She took me in the parlor
She cooled me with her fan
She whisper low in her Mama’s ear,
“I love that dark haired man.”

(Fiddle)
Oh come my lovin’ Saro
And say you’ll be mine
You shall be my lady
As long as the sun shall shine

(Fiddle)
I wish I had a nickel
I wish I had a dime
I wish I had a pretty little girl
To kiss and call her mine

(Fiddle)
Rings on her fingers
A-shining bright as gold
I’m gonna see my Saro
Before she gets too old.
