K. "The Oxford Girl." Sung by Leroy Gardner of Springdale, Ark. 12/29/53.

It was the town of Oxford
Where he did live and drill[1],
He fell in love with the Oxford girl
That lived in Oxford town.

He came up to her her sister's door
At four o'clock that day;
He asked the fairy maiden to walk with him
Down through the meadow so gay.

They walked along, they talked along,
Till they came to level ground
She fell down on her bending knees,
"I'm not prepared to die."

He picked her up by her long yeller hair
And swung her round and around.
He threw her in the old bayou,
And he watched her rolling by.

up to his He came father's door
At two o'clock that night;
Although they were old and feeble
They woke up in a fright.

They said, "Dear son, what have you done
To bloody up your hands and clothes?"
The answer that he gave to them
Was "bleeding at the nose."

He rolled and he tumbled,
No comfort could he find;
The gates of hell were over him,
And in his eyes did shine.
