The following was written in 1963 and seems to have been resolved that David was actually a son of Roderick Shelton. (Joe Payne)

"There is much disagreement as to whether Roderick Shelton or David Shelton was the first Shelton to settle in Shelton Laurel, and therefore considered the founder of Shelton Laurel. Roderick Shelton appeared in the Buncombe Co. census beginning with 1800. There is conflicting accounts as to who were his parents, but general agreement was that he was a Revolutionary War Veteran from Virginia. General agreement also is that he married Sarah Briggs, and that he had other wives; one, a Cherokee Indian woman by the name of "Nora" or "Ursula" or "Glumdalclitch" aka "Mary Franklin", aka "Mary Stevens Franklin". There just doesn't seem to be any way to choose between the various possibilities. There is some disagreement as to whether David Shelton was Roderick's son, or that David was Roderick's brother. In Buncombe County land records, their is a transfer of land to Roderick Shelton as early as August 27, 1800 and a transfer of land to David Shelton as early as December 10, 1801."

    The above taken from:

"The Sheltons" by Claymon (Clay) Hensley -Copyright 1985 page 55 & 56. Some list David's death date as Jan. 19, 1863 Madison Co.-NC.

From SHELTON FAMILIES OF McMINN CO. TENNESSEE - James Shelton "David Shelton, son of Roderick and Sarah Briggs Shelton, was born in Henry County, Virginia about 1778. He does not show in the census of 1800 in Roderick's family in Buncombe County, NC, he then being about 22 years of age and out on his won, though he doesn't show as the head of a family in the county either in the census of that year. In the census of 1810 he shows in Buncombe County with a family as follows:
    Males, 4 under 10, 1 10-26, 1 26-45; females, 1 under 10, 1 10-26, 1 26-45; 2 blacks.
    For 1830: Males, 3 under 5, 1 10-15, 2 15-20, 2 20-30, and 1 50-60; females, 1 under 5, 2 5-10, 1 20-30, and 1 40-50. The elderly male shown in the 1810 census at "45 up" was likely a grandparent.
David Shelton lived at Shelton Laurel in Buncombe County, North Carolina and is usually considered to have been the founder of that branch of the Sheltons, although his father Roderick and Roderick's cousin David Shelton were the original property owners there. On a visit to Shelton Laurel in May, 1971 this scribe was happy to become acquainted with William Bud Shelton. He owned a nice home there at Allaghany. He was knowledgeable in the history of the Sheltons there. Born in 1896, he was the great-grandson of David, being grandson of James and son of John A. Shelton. He had a copy of the letter shown page 7 from John Shelton, son of David, grandson of Roderick, written in 1905 to one James L. Wilmath."

David married Catherine Miller about 1776 in , , TN. Catherine was born about 1780 in , , TN.

"David Shelton, born Buncombe County, North Carolina, Sept. 15, 1812; died Feb. 15, 1897. One of the first white settlers in Mason County, whose Donation Claim is the site of the City of Shelton. Mr. Shelton took an active part in civic affairs, being the first mayor of the town, school superintendent, and also a member of the first state legislative assembly.
"The Simmons mill on Mill Creek was the first industrial enterprise in Mason County. The first Pilgrims, one might say, had arrived a few weeks before. They were David Shelton and his family. They had come from Missouri by ox team, with brief stops at Fort Vancouver, down on the Columbia, and Olympia. Their Plymouth Rock is now Shelton's Point, and their homestead was a land donation claim on which the business district of Shelton now stands."
