---------------------

My ancestor is James Hicks who married Mary Harris. In the DAR it states they were married in Goochland County. They later moved to Spotsylvania County.

Thomas Gilbert: Cary Hicks married Beverly Clark, son of Joseph and Mary Beverly Clark of Louisa County, Virginia (Doug. Reg. p. 9). The will of Joseph Clark of Louisa County was probated in 1774 and named Beverly Clark as his son. John Hicks died in Goochland in 1772 and named his wife Mary Hicks and among children was named Cary Clark. The witnesses to the will were Harrison Harris, Booker Parrish and Randolph Harris.(Goochland Co. deed book 10, pp. 242-243.)Three of Mary Hick's children married the sons of Harrison Harris. One of them was Elizabeth Harris married to William Randolph Hix, son of John and Mary Hicks. (Goochland County deed book 16, pp. 463-464.) Harrison Harris, Mary Hicks and her sons gave continously supplies and services for the Revolution as shown in the Public Claims. Colonel Benjamin Harrison of Snow Quarters Creek of Goochland County named in his will of 1790, his daughter Mary Hicks and his granddaughter Elizabeth Hicks. This points out that the mother of Harrison Harris was a Harrison; it also shows that Mary Hicks was Colonel Benjamin Harrison's daughter, all of Goochland County. Who was the father of Colonel Benjamin Harrison of Goochland County and what is his connection? (will: Tylers William and Mary Quarterly Mag. Vol. 18, p.22.)

James M. Hicks/Hix born c1774 in Goochland VA.
Posted by: Christi Partee

I am searching for information on who my ancestor might descend from. His name was James M. Hicks/Hix, born c1774 in Goochland Virginia. This was information he provided to the census recorder in 1860 when he was then living in Lincoln Co., NC.
I do not know what the "M" as his middle intial was for sure. One possible son was named Miles. A grandson was named James Malcolm Hicks, so "Malcolm/Malcomb" could have been what it stood for.

James Hicks was in Lincoln Co., NC., at least by 1805 when he and wife "Sussanna (Yates) were named as partioners in a law suit brought against the estate of John Yates, desc.

In 1800, John Yates was shown on the census living next door to John Hicks, who had in his household at that time, another male of the same age group as himself, both being in the 16 thru 25 free white male age group. There was also a female of the same age group, and 3 females who were all under 10 yr's old.

Among the other names in the law suit as partioners, was Margaret Hicks (who may have been John Hicks wife, and who was surely another daughter of John Yates, implying that two of the Yates daughters married two Hicks brothers....Sussanna md. James Hicks and Margaret married John Hicks.
I believe that the other male in John Hicks household in 1800 was in fact James, and they were likely brothers.

Other names in this lawsuit were likely other children of John Yates and were probably a son and a daughter & the rest were married daughters. The names were:
Samuel Vaughn and wife Polly (prob. named Mary Yates by birth)
John Yates (Jr.)
Edward MacClean (McLaine) and wife Nancy (Yates)
Elizabeth Yates

The two married HIcks (daughters) named in this suit later received two lots in Lincolnton, Lincoln Co., NC., from the estate of John Yates.

John HIcks disappears from the records after the 1800 census and I believe he died before this lawsuit in 1805 as he was not named as Margaret's husband, while Sussanna's husband was named.

In 1810, James Hicks was named as a head of household in Lincoln Co., NC., and continued to be so until his death after 1870, when he last appeared as age 95. He was Blind on both the 1860 & 1870 census.

The children who I believe were James's but who in part may have been John's, especially the older ones were:
Phoebe b. c1800 - md. William Clifton - later moved to McNairy Co., TN.

Susannah b. c1802 - never married

Miles b.c1809 - md. Louisa Sanders 1st, 2nd to Susannah Childers - later was in Catawba Co., NC. *Miles middle name may have been Adolphus.

David b.c1811 - moved to McNairy Co., TN., - md. Rachel Caroline Russom

William b.c1813 - md. Mary "Polly" Robinson - moved to McNairy Co., TN.

Joseph b.c1814 - moved to McNairy Co., TN. - md. Rebecca Evaline Russom

Singleton b.c1816 - md. Minera ? - Moved briefly to McNairy Co., TN., then back to Catawba Co., NC.

Epsey b. c1824 - md. Andrew Alexander Blalock - later was in Catawba Co. NC.

If all of the above were for sure the children of James, or even John and they were in fact brothers, that puts both James and John in NC., bwt. 1795-1800 when the oldest "Phoebe" was born. All these children named NC. as their place of birth with one exception. Phoebe was shown in 1850 to have named VA. as her place of birth, but all later census's had NC. as her state of birth and these were all after the death of her husband, so it was likely her that provided that information on all the census's after 1850 when she said NC.

I would most appreciate any information anyone might have come across that would name James (and John) in records of the appropriate time period that might connect them as sons of a Hicks in the area of Goochland Co., VA. during the time period to have had sons born c1774-1784.
James's age shown in and after 1850 would have him born c1774-75.
John may have been born as early as 1774 and as late as 1784 I'd say since he was named as the head of the household in 1800, therefore of legal age to be a head of household, and he was enumerated in the 16-25 age group.

James apparently died without a will as none has been found in the NC. records. Nothing for John has yet been found either. There was a "Mary Hicks" as a head of household in Lincoln Co., NC., in 1840 living next door to Miles HIcks and he was next door to James Hicks. (Miles was either the son of James or of John, desc.
Mary had a female 60 to 70 (herself, I'm guessing), also 1 female 20 to 30 and 1 male 5 to 10 yr's old in her home in 1840. I don't know if this is the "Margaret (Yates) Hicks named in the lawsuit against John Yates estate in 1805 and if she is the widow of John Hicks or not. If she is the female who was 60 to 70 in the home, that does place her in the right age group to have been John's widow.
The mystery is 'where was she' in 1810, 1820 and 1830?. Perhaps she was living with some of her Yates family or older children?

I would most appreciate any information which seems to connect to my Hicks/Hix and or Yates family, one or both coming out of Goochland Co., VA.
