Yonder Sits a Spanish Lady- Shepherd (Glou) 1909

[My title. From Cecil Sharp Manuscript Collection (at Clare College, Cambridge) (CJS2/9/2015). This version was titled O No John with no chorus as if every version of Madam is O No John.

R. Matteson 2017]

Yonder Sits a Spanish Lady- sung by William Shepherd of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire on 8 April, 1909. Collector: Sharp, Cecil J.

1 Yonder sits a Spanish lady,
Who she is I do not know,
I'll go court her for her beauty,
Whether she answers Yes or No,
Whether she answers Yes or No.

2 Madam I am come to court you,
If your favour I should gain.
If you will entertain me,
Perhaps then I might come again. [bis.]

3 Sit down sir, you're kindly welcome,
[rest of 3 forgotten]

4. Madam, I have rings and jewels,
Madam, I have houses and lands,
Madam, I have the world of treasure,
And all shall be at your command.

5. What care I for rings and jewels,
What care I for houses and lands,
What care I for world of treasure,
So as I have a handsome man.

6. Madam you think much of beauty,
Beauty's a flower that soon does fade,
The finest flower in yon garden,
Will soon fade and die away.

7. First comes night and then comes day,
So we pass our time away,
First comes young ones, then comes old ones,
So we pass our time away.
