Ship's Carpenter- Jos Taylor (Linc) 1906 Grainger

[My title. Single with music from Percy Grainger Manuscript Collection (PG/5/15). Noted by Broadwood on May 7 and recorded on phonograph by Grainger on July 28, 1906. Broadwood inspired Grainger to begin collecting folk songs after a 1905 Broadwood lecture and he eventually collected over 300 --beginning first at Brigg, Lincolnshire.

Grainger, who moved to the US in 1914 was a friend of my grandparents. He regaled them with stories of his exploits on a visit. He claimed, for example, that he threw a ball over a house and ran through it to catch it on the other side!

The Ship's Carpenter - sung by Joseph Taylor (an estate bailiff) of Brigg, Lincolnshire on  May 7,  1906 and  July 28 1906. Collector: Grainger, Percy.

In Worcester City in Worcestershire
A handsome young damsel and she's lived there,
A handsome young man courted her to be his dear
And by his trade was a ship's carpenter.
