OTHER NAMES: "Daemon Lover," "Well Met" "House Carpenter's Wife"

RELATED TO: “False Young Man”

SOURCES: Folk Index; Traditional Ballad Index

NOTES: This is an instrumental fiddle version of the popular US ballad, The House Carpenter (Child 243). A standard first verse is supplied below. It was recorded by Alan Jabbour November 26, 1966 at Henry Reed's family home, Glen Lyn, Virginia (Giles County). Known primarily as a ballad there are several outstanding traditional fiddle versions.

Jabbour's Notes: This is an old traditional ballad widely circulated in the British Isles and the United States (see Child #243 "James Harris (The Daemon Lover")). Henry Reed's tune is the preferred tune for the ballad in the Upper South, and indeed it is probably the favored melody throughout the ballad's range; see Bronson, "The Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads", for a full survey of variant versions. The repetition of the last two phrases, which Henry Reed reproduces here, occurs with some frequency in sung versions of the ballad. His style here is typical of the older fiddle style for playing airs, and it captures the looser rhythm of unaccompanied singing as well as some of the details of vocal ornamentation.

"Well met, well met," said an old true love,
"Well met, well met," said he.
"I'm just returning from the salt, salt sea,
And it's all for the love of thee."
